Terrible terrible terrible!, March 12, 2007

This book is terrible! This is not a good review for anybody who hasn't had any previous accounting experience. The text is not written in user-friendly wording. I had somebody who is an accountant look at this book and although they understood it, they said it wasn't written very well at all! I had to buy this for an Masters level "Introduction" to financial and managerial accounting class and I know that a lot of people in the class dropped the class because they were having such a hard time with the text. If you have accounting experience, you will probably not think this book is bad, but if you're like me and haven't, then you'll be in trouble. As a degreed engineer, I've had my fair share of experience reading non-friendly texts. This one is definitely up there as far as the "BOOK FROM HELL" category.

Comprehensive but surprisingly relevant, August 19, 2011

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)

This review is from: Accounting: Texts and Cases (Hardcover)

Accounting: Texts and Cases is not your ordinary accounting text book. It successfully do away with the serious-type discussion that elicits a lot of zzzz's while reading. This book has combined detailed story-like presentation of issues and topics making Accounting concepts easier to understand. Numerous real-life examples and illustrations make the concepts more relevant.

How I hope that more textbooks are written this way. It gives learning a new twist making study more interesting. Again, after a long while, we find books like this that we wish we could keep beside our work tables to be used in the future. Curiously, the large space in the margins also provides a thoughtful space for comments and insights. Truly, this book has been designed to become a significant tool in learning accounting.

I've never look at accounting the way this book presented it. Quite satisfied and delighted with it.

Be very careful with the information in this book, February 2, 2008

By

The information contained in this book is very complicated, and will lead you to faulty analysis and the wrong conclusions if not done incredibly carefully and slowly. These are not the methods that I use in my job as a professional finance manager; to apply many of these methods would not be cost effective due to the complexity. Be very careful with this information; this is written by teachers, not practitioners. I DO NOT recommend this for teachers or students. There are many other management accounting texts out there, and several of them are MUCH better for learning the methods actually applied in day to day business operations.

Formatted terribly for Kindle app on iPad, January 1, 2013

Something must be lost in translation to the Kindle version. Poor formatting makes significant portions of book difficult to understand.

Well Written for Non-Accountants/Bookkeepers, August 18, 1999

By A Customer

This review is from: Keeping the Books (Paperback)

This book is excellent and well written for people who are NEW to bookkeeping/accounting for small business. I especially found the checklists provided (when to pay various Federal and State Taxes, to whom to pay various Federal and State Taxes, when to produce certain financial reports, what to have ready for your Tax Accountant at year end and in what format) to be VERY useful. EXCELLENT reference book for the do-it-yourself bookkeeper.

Great book!, July 6, 2001

This is a really great book for beginners. I'm not a proffesional accountant (my primary area is computer systems administrations) but I have been working in banks for 5 years and I read a lot of books about accounting basics because it was part of my job. And usually those books were either too practical or too academic. But this one is perfectly balanced. It explains you not only what to do but it also gives you a pretty solid background why you should do this and what for. It shows you a complete picture of a small company accounting including major forms, reports shedule, books etc and that's all in just 200 pages. It's amazing how the author can explain in a couple words some concepts which usually takes a whole chapter in some other tutorials. You can read it to just to get some idea about accounting wording and concepts, or you can keep it on the table and use as a Howto giude in your everyday work, it works both ways. And it's pretty fairly priced. Very, very nice book!

Great book for small business owners...., December 11, 2006

This is one of my two favorite accounting books for small business owners. The other is "Small Business Accounting Simplified" by Daniel Sitarz. These books present a lot of the same information, but they have slightly different perspectives on small business accounting and I think both viewpoints are useful and complimentary. Establishing your accounting system is serious business, so I would consider purchasing both. It's a small investment considering how important and time consuming this area could be for small business.

With that said, this book will help you to understand the basics of accounting and the advantages and disadvantages of various methods of keeping your books. It is very streamlined, practical and will help you to get your books together quickly using the easiest system that is appropriate for your business.

This is a very non-intimidating book and first time business owners will really like it. The other book I recommended above by Sitarz is more involved and may be something you want to get down the road. If you are a very small business, this book may have all you need and you may appreciate that it lacks some detail that might be unnecessary.

Both books that I mention are adequate to get a small business up and running. However, if you are not a numbers person by nature or have an aversion to accounting, this might be the best place to start. As part of my livelihood I do small business consulting and this title and the one I mentioned in the first paragraph are the two books I most often recommend for a new small business.
