Sebastian Vollmer rising as 2009 NFL draft neared

With the 58th overall pick in the NFL Draft the New England Patriots select Houston OT Sebastian Vollmer. Vollmer is one of the more unusual stories in this year's draft class. He did not start playing football until he was 14 years old, but still helped his German prep school win two national championships.

According to Belichick, “ sebastian Vollmer played in the East-West game and has played both left tackle and right tackle in college and in the all-star game. We think he gives us some flexibility, also a big man who works hard and brings some size and toughness. We look forward to seeing him compete on the offensive line.”

sebastian Vollmer, who is represented by agent Leonard Roth of Houston, wasn’t a typical first-day pick, however. He wasn’t invited to the NFL scouting combine and wasn’t even originally invited to an all-star game.

sebastian Vollmer, a native of Germany, eventually made his way into the East-West Shrine Game, which was held on the UH campus, and he took full advantage of the opportunity.

It was during the East-West Shrine workouts that the Patriots took notice of him. Dante Scarnecchia, the Patriots’ assistant head coach/offensive line, then ran UH’s pro day, and he put Vollmer through offensive line drills. His versatility intrigued the Patriots, Belichick said in an interview with ESPN after selecting Vollmer.
