How long are semesters and how many are on a school year? My school in Iowa runs by trimesters so three trimesters and that's three months a tri so what is a semester?

I used to go to a Community College about 2 years ago and we had 3 sessions: Fall, Spring and Summer. Some Colleges even have a winter session. Fall and Spring last the same time, about 5 months but they call it a semester. Summer had two sessions that lasted about a month. About winter I'm not sure, but I'm sure is similar to summer.
