Answer by JKC
For the invasion phase it was mostly Special Forces (the Green Berets had some of their finest moments there) supporting the Northern Alliance, a group that controlled the Northern part of Afghanistan (hence the name) and had been in a stalemate with the Taliban. Then the Air Force showed up and bombed the Taliban into a fine dust.
Later after the fall of Kabul, regular US troops were moved into the area.
Currently 90,000 US troops are stationed in Afghanistan. 118,000 total NATO forces are present in Afghanistan. Then you add the 128,000 strong Afghan army. The Taliban and its allies (Al-Qaeda chief among them) number near 136,000.
