Question by .: How many people are being affected by the SoCal fires? I heard that 7 counties, including LA, are being affected. How many homes are truly at risk, thousands, tens or hundreds of thousands? Is there real danger for people, or can they be given sufficient warning to evacuate?
Best answer:
Answer by Jackie The fires have burned more than 30,000 of acres of land already throughout Southern California, from Santa Barbara to San Diego County near the Mexico border, fed by strong Santa Ana winds, high temperatures and low humidity.
The wildfires are being driven by dry conditions and winds gusting up to 60 miles per hour, making it impossible to fight the fires with helicopters, and fire officials expect these conditions to continue for several days.
In Los Angeles, the Canyon fire at the celebrity enclave of Malibu has burned more than 2,000 acres, destroying five homes and a church and damaging several other homes. California fire officials say 600 residences and more than 200 commercial buildings are threatened by the fire.
About 200 homes have been evacuated in the communities of Malibu Colony, Puerco Canyon, Monte Nido and Sweetwater Canyon, officials said.
The Buckweed fire northeast of Los Angeles has burned 10,000 acres and is not yet contained. Two homes have been destroyed and fire officials say 3,800 residences.
The Rector and the Rogue: Being the true and incredible account of a dastardly hoax against an upright (if rather stuffy) divine. It turned New York upside down. It began quietly enough one morning in February 1880, with a mutton-chopped Acme Safe Company salesman knocking on the door of Reverend Morgan Dix, the starchiest clergyman in Manhattan's most respectable church. The salesman was surely misdirected, Reverend Dix explained—he had no need for a safe, and he had not made an appointment. But soon after, used clothes dealers arrived, followed by heavy machinery salesmen, and soon the street filled riotously with wave after wave of solicitor-tormentors—hundreds of funeral directors, horse traders, wigmakers, fellow clergymen, doctors—all insisting they'd been summoned by the bewildered Reverend Dix. And for weeks, it continued in this manner. Reporters from every newspaper in New York campe

Grover Norquist on Fiscal Cliff, Tax Pledges, & Being the GOP's "Rasputin" "The people who attack me as 'Rasputin' think that the Republicans truly want to raise taxes," says Grover Norquist, the head of Americans for Tax Reform. ATR's "Taxpayer Protection Pledge" has drawn the ire of Democrats and the media as the fiscal cliff approaches. Candidates and officeholders who sign the pledge vow not to raise net taxes on individuals and businesses. For the past couple of decades, signing the pledge has become a pro forma exercise for Republicans with aspirations for national office. His critics, continues Norquist, think "the only thing keeping [GOP legislators] from raising taxes...is that I would call them names." Reason's Nick Gillespie sat down with Norquist to discuss the attacks, why he thinks Obama wants to take the US over the fiscal cliff, and whether House Majority Leader John Boehner can ever be trusted to control spending.
