Im in 9th grade and i dont understand how to find out how many atoms are in an element. Is there an easy way to figure this out?

You need to first find the molecular weight of the compound. Go to the Periodic Table and look up the weight of each type of atom, and multiply that by the number of give atoms in the compound (eg. CO2 would be 12+16*2=44g.).

You then figgure out how many moles of the compound you have. If you already know this then you can skip step 1.

You then multiply by the number of moles of substance contained in the compound, and then Avogadro's constant to fine the number of atoms.

You can do all this easy using dimensional analysis. For example, if you are given 22 grams of CO2, and you want to find the number of Oxygen atoms there are, Then your problem will look like this:

22 grams CO2*(1mol. CO2/44 Grams CO2)(2 mol C/1mol CO2) (6.022*10^23 C atoms/1mol C)= 6.022*10^23 C atoms.

Remember that you want to set you dimensional analysis problem up so that all of the units cancel out except for the one that you want to get.
