How many molecules of O2 and how many atoms are present in this sample?

what is the best answer to

Question by Inner Peace: How many molecules of O2 and how many atoms are present in this sample?
How many molecules of O2 and how many atoms are present in this sample?
A sample of oxygen gas 02 wighs 28.4 g. How many molecules of O2 and how many atoms are present in this sample?

What is the formula to figure this calculation? Please help. Dont know where to start!

Best answer:

Answer by varun
mass =28.4
molar mass of O=16
moles=28.4/16
=1.7750
number of atoms =10^24 (approx)
number of molecules=5*10^23

How do you firgure out how many atoms are in an element?

what is the best answer to

Question by Aleigh: How do you firgure out how many atoms are in an element?
Im in 9th grade and i dont understand how to find out how many atoms are in an element. Is there an easy way to figure this out?

You need to first find the molecular weight of the compound. Go to the Periodic Table and look up the weight of each type of atom, and multiply that by the number of give atoms in the compound (eg. CO2 would be 12+16*2=44g.).

You then figgure out how many moles of the compound you have. If you already know this then you can skip step 1.

You then multiply by the number of moles of substance contained in the compound, and then Avogadro's constant to fine the number of atoms.

You can do all this easy using dimensional analysis. For example, if you are given 22 grams of CO2, and you want to find the number of Oxygen atoms there are, Then your problem will look like this:

22 grams CO2*(1mol. CO2/44 Grams CO2)(2 mol C/1mol CO2) (6.022*10^23 C atoms/1mol C)= 6.022*10^23 C atoms.

Remember that you want to set you dimensional analysis problem up so that all of the units cancel out except for the one that you want to get.

you see it in the formula. H = hydrogen, and next to it below is the number that shows the amount of hydrogen atoms in the molecule.

There are no hydrogen atoms in those, because they are already atoms themselves.

Too many to count. Since there are over a million atoms on the end of a pentip, just think how many there are in the pen, then think how many there are in the world. Now think about the whole universe. Yeah, that's how many.

The largest number ever conceived is a googolplex, which is 10^10000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000

That's 100 if you are wondering. It is estimated that it would be impossible to write out that number because it would take up more matter than the universe contains.
