She really didn't become famous until around the time 'A Dangerous Path' came out. Its the same with most authors who publish several books; they aren't noticed until they publish a few books, and then once someone important notices/a lot of people start reading, then they get famous. They don't get noticed usually until the second book. why? They don't have a fanbase. But once people read their first book, they become fans and they get excited for the next book. Thus making them 'famous'.
Same happened with J.K. Rowling and Stephanie Meyer. They didn't get famous until around their second books came out because no one knew what Twilight or Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone was about. But when New Moon and HP and the Chamber of Secrets came out, Rowling and Meyer had a fanbase who drew attention to their books.

It probably depends how much hype has been built up about the book. Like with Harry Potter or the last twilight book, they are talked about for months before hand so the shops know that if they open at midnight people will be queuing up to buy the book...

By the way, "Necklace of Kisses" is pretty interesting because you get the chance to see Weetzie almost middle-aged, with her daughters grown and away from home. She has sort of a mid-life crisis and isn't sure whether or not she wants to be with her Secret Agent Lover Man anymore, so she runs off to stay in a hotel where she meets a lot of interesting people. Cherokee and Witch Baby make small appearances in the book but it's mostly all about Weetzie, so that's nice. :-)
I usually recommend this series to people that are maybe not as much into reading as I am. I find that the fanciful style of writing really pulls some people into reading more, especially girls. Perhaps boys might not be so into the books, I'm not sure. I'm also not sure if there are going to be any more Weetzie books but I hope so, I'd love to see Weetzie as a grandmother. :-)
